Cannot connect to drive and install it

I am attempting to install my new MyBook Live 2TB drive to my wireless network via my MacBook running Snow Leopard.  Everything is connected properly and the green lights are showing; however the instructions tell me to go to “http://mybooklive” to bypass the wireless and get to the Dashboard.  Every time I try this in any browser (Safari, Firefox, Flock), I get automatically taken to " http://www.mybooklive.com" which is something else entirely. I tried talking to a support guy at WD via the phone, and he was totally useless. Can someone please help me get this installed?  I really want this to work, but I am very frustrated with the utter lack of decent instructions.

You have a DNS problem.

Your DNS server is not resolving the name to your INTERNAL network.

Here’s how it should work:

C:\Users\Tony>nslookup
Default Server: sol.[hidden].net
Address: 10.0.0.1

> mybooklive
Server: sol.[hidden].net <--- This is my ROUTER which acts as DNS.
Address: 10.0.0.1

Name: mybooklive
Address: 10.0.0.15 <--- This is the correct address for my MBL.

> server 4.2.2.1 <--- Changing DNS to my ISP's DNS...
Default Server: vnsc-pri.sys.gtei.net
Address: 4.2.2.1

> mybooklive
Server: vnsc-pri.sys.gtei.net
Address: 4.2.2.1

*** vnsc-pri.sys.gtei.net can't find mybooklive: Non-existent domain
^^^ Cannot resolve the name, which is the correct behavior.

At any rate, you can probably do http://[ip address of your MBL]   instead of using the name…

Try …  http://mybooklive.local/

Oooh.   That’s an insteresting trick!

When you install Apple’s Bonjour print services for Windows and/or Smartware stuff then it interacts with mDNSResponder within the MyBookLive and the name will resolve.  It confused me for a bit because I don’t have anything with a .local on my network so I had a root round and found this in the NAS…

NAS:~# cd /etc
NAS:/etc# cat mDNSResponder.conf
NAS
_http._tcp local.
80
TXTVersion=1.1
Vendor=WDC
modelURL=http://www.wdc.com/mybooklive
manufacturer=Western Digital Corporation
manufacturerURL=http://www.wdc.com
modelDescription=My Book Live Network Storage
modelName=My Book Live
modelNumber=AP1NC
serialNumber={removed}
UDN={removed}

NAS
_daap._tcp local.
3689
Machine Name=NAS

NAS
_afpovertcp._tcp local.
12548

NAS-backup
_adisk._tcp local.
548
dk0=adVN=TimeMachine,adVF=0x81

NAS:/etc#

I’m not 100% sure how the mDNSResponder and Apple’s Bonjour actually works but I’m guess it’s to do with some sort of zero effort configuration regarding domain names.

Put it another way…  For me I notice from a cold start \\nas.local works a lot sooner than \\nas and there is no .local domain statically defined on my network.
