Currently have a 500GB USB external drive. Thinking of buying a 2TB MyBookLive so that I can attach it to my router. The idea is so that can make unattended backups. However I’m concerned that I will havde to obviously leave the unit permamently plugged in to the mains and switched on 24/7. Is this a problem or does the drive go into ‘hibernation’ when not being used?
Absolutely, it goes to sleep after 10 minutes of inactivity. Some people have reported issues with the drive NOT going to sleep with some of the extra services running though such as remote access. If you are going to use it as a basic file server you should have no issues at all though.
