Update of latest firmware for OSX Mavericks

Hi,

My IMAC which runs the latest OSX Mavericks is backed up on MBLD (Raid mode, 2TB on each drive). When I wanted to update to the latest WD firmware on dashboard, it warns that I should create a safepoint? 

  1. What is the safest way to update?

  2. Can I get any external (non WD type) USB 2TB drive for the safepoint, if necessary?

I had the bad experience of trying to install the Mavericks OS on my old hard disk which was damaged through a failed installation. Now I have a replaced new hardisk with the latest OSX with a sucessful migration from the MBLD backup. Please help.

Your WD My Book Live Duo is recommending to perform a SafePoint before performing a Firmware update as a precaution in order to prevent data loss in case there is an unfortunate situation (Like a power outage) that results in update failure, which could render the device unusable.
