That’s called “File Name Mangling.” Really. It is. :)
Most often that seems to be happening when you’ve saved a file using a Mac (connected via Apple Filing Protocol [afp]) and then trying to access them via a PC connected via Samba (smb.)
It happens when a file name which is legal in AFP is not legal in SMB; though I don’t see anything at all weird about the name tedsstory.pdf.
