WD Smartware Disk Full Backup Not Complete, but i have a 500gb laptop and a 1Tb WD drive?

Hi all,

I’ve been hunting the forums but can’t find the answer,

I have a 500gb laptop and a 1Tb WD drive, but i keep getting the message that the Disk is full and the backup is not complete. I have spoken to WD support, and they say…

"If you are using our backup software (WD Smartware), this software keeps several copies of a single file (every time when you make a change in the file, the new backup of this file is created, but the original one is kept). Also, when you delete any file form the computer, the backup file is not deleted.

The only way how to clear the external drive is to retrieve all files from the external drive which you want to keep, format this external drive and backup the data back to the external drive. "

I find it crazy that you can’t just ‘sync’ so only keep current files, rather than create duplicate files as indicated above. Sounds like the only way to fix it is to reformat and start again, but that would mean at the time of the reformat i don’t have a backup of my data. Should the worst happen and my laptop drive go pop whilst reformatting the WD drive i would lose everything!!!

Does anyone know any other way around this? Otherwise i guess i need to just buy another external drive that does offer the ‘sync’ option and put the WD drive down as not meeting my needs :frowning:

Am i missing something???

Thanks,

Check out SyncToy http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=15155 at MS  it’s free. I use GoodSync paid http://www.goodsync.com/  . I didn’t like the Smartware either.
