WD External hard drive not shown up on My Computer and Hang up During Boot

Today when i connected my western digital passport essential (500gb) to my desktop it does not shown up on my computer and when i restarted my desktop it hanged up in ‘windows is starting’ section. When i try to open device manager it does not open and as i disconnected my hd hardrive device manager opens, it even not chkds in command prompt when the hard drive is connected.So someone please give me a solution for it i have so much important files in it …pls reply…My operating system is xp

My passport stopped working. Light is on, fell it running, but computer does not recognise it. Any Suggestions?

I purchased WD My book 2 TB two months back and since It was working fine on my Windows XP Desktop,

But Yesterday I connected it with my new Dell inspiron laptop having windows 8. At first it get recognized but after 2-3 minutes it lost connection…………L  and after that It is not recognized  neither by Laptop nor by desktop…………only blinks light…L…………Please help……….
