MyBook is Empty! Help!

We have been using the MyBook for months, if not more than that.  It has worked just fine until the last few days.  The computer recognizes the drive (even in the “Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media” icon), but the folder says it’s empty.  This is a home computer and only a teenager and adult use it.  There were MANY folders, so no one accidentally deleted it (unless there’s a way to wipe the whole MyBook at once, without realizing it).

So, my questions are:  could it actually be possible that nothing is on the drive now and that we’ve lost a scary amount of data that isn’t backed up elsewhere (a nauseating thought, since the MyBook should be the backup drive for data that should otherwise be on the computer’s hard drive)?  Is there any way to recover the data (yes, there is a certain amount of desperation here.  Again, see the above about how the MyBook should have been the backup, not the only place for the data to be stored)?   Simply, does f:\ (Empty) mean that there is no hope for data recovery?

Thanks for your help or confirmation.

Well try going to Disk Management and see what it says about drive there. Try going to Device Manager and deleting the driver for this drive. Then disconnect drive and reboot system and reconnect. That will load a fresh driver. If that doesn’t work there may be something corrupt then something like TestDisk http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk may fix a corrupt partition. Sadly you just learned to not trust important data to just one drive. One copy is not a backup.
