How to retrieve an old back up on a Mac

I lost my macbook pro laptop and had to buy a new one, when I tried to retrieve the oldest back up into the new computer the wd smartware essential is not letting me access the icon to retrieve the old back up.  what can I do? I have 23 years of information in this backup.  I am desperate. Thank you.

If you did the backup in a really old version of smartware it might not be compatible with the new version. You have the option to explore the external hard drive manually and open the smartware.swstor to copy your files manually.
