Broken mini USB port

The mini USB port on my my book ext hard drive broke.  I purchased an acc cable from a local tech store that is built to read most all types of hard drives by connecting via a cable that is USB on one end and a multi config on the other.  They told me the hard drive must be set as a master on the jumper settings.  I cannot figure out how to extract the information I have stored on the WD10EARS that I took out of the mybook shell.  I CANNOT LOOSE THE DATA.  IT IS ALL THE MEMORIES I HAVE OF MY KIDS. PLEASE HELP

The WD10EARS is a SATA hard drive, there is no jumper settiing required, the drive should have no jumper at all.  If you cannot access the data just by plugging the drive you may use a data recovery software like recuva.
