WD no longer makes the Mybook live, which was a NAS devise. This Mybook is a direct connect device not capable of being an NAS or acting as a media storage/server for a network. If true, what should I purchase as I won’t have this always attached to my PC?

You can use this drive with the media player if you connect it through USB. If you are looking for a NAS drive then I recommend you take a look at the WD My Cloud.
