Unlocking a new hard drive without installing the software

just got a new WD mybook 3TB external harddrive. figured it would be simple plug and play, but i can’t seem to figure out how to unlock it, the manual seems to want to force me to use the smartware, but i’d rather not, and i don’t want to use timemachine, i just want to use it like a regular old external harddrive. any help would be hugely appreciated!

Chances are the drive needs to be formatted to work with your computer before you can start using it.

You can use the drive without Smartware or any other software.

Connect the drive to the computer and manually copy files to the drive.

thanks for the advice, works all the way til i try to do it, but then get this message:

Partition failed with the error:

Could not unmount disk

any ideas?

This could happen if the drive is been used while you attempt to format.

Make sure no files have been opened prior to partitioning the drive.

You can restart the Mac and retry. This will make sure all open applications and file are closed.
