Icon wont pop up on my screen

my WD 1tb external hard drive icon wont pop up on my MAC. the light turns on and i can hear it working but it does not show an icon on my screen. I really need all the data on my external. can anyone please give me some guidance with this issue

Check if the drive appears on Disk Utility.
