WD Thunderbolt Duo drives in 3rd party RAID enclosure

I have been given a WD My Book Thunderbolt Duo (2 drives - 4TB total) to use for a job. I don’t have a Thunderbolt port so I am wondering if I can insert these two hard drives into an empty 2 bay RAID enclosure.

The Thunderbolt Duo, unlike its predecessors, uses software RAID and seems to be managable using the WD Utilities software and/or Disk Utility. So it seems to be that if I connect these drives to my computer using another enclosure (over USB 3) then I should be able to read the existing data, which is using RAID 0.

I’m about to buy a 2 bay RAID enclosure so I read the data on the Thunderbolt Duo drives (WD Green Caviar). Before I do so, I want to make sure they can actually be read using either the WD Utilities software or Disk Utility.

Thanks!

Hello, unfortunately that is not possible, if you place the internal hard drives in another enclosure, you will need to format them before your can use them.

Hi Ichigo,

Thank you for your response.

What enclosures will I need to access the date on these drives?

For example, a WD My Book Live Duo 4TB?
