My passport is only staying connected/ “active” for about 30 seconds to 1 minute and then the light stops flashing and it says that it is now disconnected. If I pick the hard drive up and shake it a little it re-activates but why wont it stay active for longer than 1 minute? I do not have any problems loading images and files into the hard drive, it just wont stay connected…

it could be a bad cable or a power issue…
do you have a Macbook?
test with a different cable and see if you have better results
you might need a power booster cable
