WD My Passport Essential SE 1TB Unmountable ANYwhere

I’ve never had trouble with this until today. My drive isn’t recognized on any OS, or by anything BUT the System Profiler/Drive manager.

If the drive is plugged into my computer upon boot, it just sits on a grey screen doing nothing until I unplug it.

I have hundreds of gigs of important video and files as I do production and can’t afford to reformat, but so far, even THAT isn’t an option I could pursue if I wanted. Nor can I access the drive to do any kind of back up.

I had reformatted it when I bought it in effort NOT to use the smartware and that seemed to not have caused the issue for nearly a year. So I’m skeptical it is that, but wouldn’t be surprised.

I tried to update the firmware but it says my drive is locked and I need to unlock it- have no idea what that means because I never locked it in the first place.

Please, for the love of all 3000 gods, help me fix this.

I’m using:

An intel Mac

2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon

14 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC

OS X 10.8.2

Try updating the firmware on a windows computer and see if it takes
