Stuck 'unmounting disk' when attempting to format

Hello,

I have just recently gotten a My Passport 2TB and I wanted to reformat the device to work on my mac. I have read the instructions given here, but the disk utility is stuck unmounting the disk for over 20 minutes, then it returns this message,

"Partition failed with the error:

Unable to write to the last block of the device."

 What is going wrong with the drive?

Please try resetting the computer and then try again.

If possible I recommend that you connect the drive to a Windows computer and run a diagnostic using Western Digital Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool. You may also use this tool to write zeros to the drive and then try to format it again.
