Question about turning computer off with your External HD hooked up

I just purchased a WD My Book (USB 3.0/2.0) for Mac.  When I have the USB plugged in the harddisk icon is on the desktop as it should be.  I plan on leaving the USB plugged in.  Do I need to move the harddisk icon to the trash (to “eject” it) each time I want to turn the computer off or restart?

Thank you very much,

Marc

No you don’t need to eject the hard drive by putting the icon into the trash, when you turn off your computer.

The Mac, in it’s shutdown process, does it al;l for you - It closes any open Apps, and shuts down any drives connected to it.

However, if you wish to turn off your external hard drive, without shutting down the computer, you must drag the hard disk icon to the trash, before switching off the disk.

If you forget, run it through Disk Utility; Verify and Repair, when next you power up.

AlCapone,

Thank you VERY much!  You answered my question in full.
