Just how are you actually trying to format it? The right way to do it is using disk utlity on a Mac.

Disk utility

Select the drive (Will show the space on the left)

Partition

Volume scheme to 1 for a full drive

Options

GUID if your Mac is Intel; Apple Partition if you use an older G4/G5/IBM Mac

Select Mac OS extended journaled as the format

Apply/Partition

You’re done.

What is this file system formatter you’re talking about?

Yes I did all that, and it fails with “Error File system formatter failed” I also trid the WD quick formatter and it also failed.

What is the name of the drive you are trying to format on the left side of disk utility?

I ckicked on the drive, " 1TB WD Passport 07"

That sounds about ght. Try changing the cable, maybe you got a bad drive.

I think the “bad drive”  is correct. Time to make it a paperweight. Thanks for your help.

Check the warranty on wd’s site, maybe it’s still on time for a replacement.
