Need help using WD mypassport essential

Hey Guys,

Im hoping you can help me out because this ting atm is driving me insane :stuck_out_tongue:

Anyway… I have a new macbook pro (only had for about a month)

I just yesterday bought a WD my passport essential portable hard drive assuming that it could be used just like any flash drive…

i opened it plugged it in after stuffing around i found the instrucions, I then installed WD Smartware. After i did this it dawned upon me that it wasnt as simple as it seemed. I the went to the tab at the top of smartware and went to back it up. The trouble was it came off with a message “wipe Drive” so being  noob i opened up the hard drives settings and wiped it… Now it doesnt even show up on my computer and the tabs backup and Retrieve are unusable ???

my 2 questions are

1.can it be used as a flash drive so i can plug it in on other non mac computers and just access files??

  1. can i back my comp up put new stuff on the hard drive from other comps that then doesnt go back onto my computer???

hope you people can help me out id really appreciate it (sorry 4 bein noob  )

I bon’t know much Mbout macs, when you selected wipe drive it deleted everything. To use drive on both you will have to choose the right format. The simpelist is FAT32 but that has a max file size of 4 gigs. I’ll post a couple links http://community.wdc.com/t5/External-Drives-for-Mac/WD-My-Book-Elite-Using-on-a-Mac-amp-PC/m-p/92308#M1894 and   http://community.wdc.com/t5/External-Drives-for-Mac/WD-drive-as-a-back-up-for-Windows-7-and-MAC-OS-locked-files/m-p/84753#M1830  Look at the posts by PizzaMatrix he knows what’s he doing.
