MyPassport with OSX Yosemite

Hi,

We have a “My Passport for Mac”. It has been working perfectly fine on the macbook until I installed Yosemite. Since then, when I plug it in it starts making a noise repeatedly and after a while it stops.

I’ve tried the following

  1. Disk Utility, but the device is not visible there anymore
  2. WD Diagnostic tools. They detect the drive but when I click on it it says NO VOLUMES detected and does not let me do anything.
  3. WD Firmware Updater. As a last resort and hope I downloaded the firmware updater. After a couple of steps I get a message saying Drive is locked (I never locked it, I never even had installed the WD tools before).

What are my options here (besides downgrading from Yosemite - not an option). How can I access my files again?

Is this WD Passport a USB 3.0 model? If so, what happens if you try a USB 2.0 cable? While the USB 3.0 connector may seem to be a custom/proprietary connector at first, it actually fits regular Micro USB 2.0 cables into the flat side.

Hi Trancer,

The drive is USB2 (it’s pretty old, before USB3 came to life) and I use the same cable I was always using (the one that came with the drive). The only thing that changed was upgrading to Yosemite. Before that drive was working perfectly fine.

I am using the same laptop, the same cable, pretty much all the same except for the Operating System (Yosemite).

Maybe you should try contacting WD’s Technical Support about this. You can do so either by phone or email.
