My Passport 1T External Hard drive - Low data transfer

I recently purchased a WD - My Passpot 1T hard drive to backup my photos. But, I was disappointed to see that it offers a very slow data transfer. I know the hard drive comes with a USB 3.0 cable which is compatible with USB 2.0 also. I guess my Macbook Pro’s USB ports are version 2.0. However I do not think that should slow down to a rate like 5mbps :frowning:

Here’s the rsync output:

sent 5194274963 bytes received 150190 bytes 5826612.62 bytes/sec
total size is 88238277991 speedup is 16.99

a little maths to calculate megabytes per second

5826612.62/1024/1024
5.5566908073425292968

The Nikon RAW files I shoot are normally of 18-30mb size. I see each file takes 3 seconds or more to get copied over.

Is this the maximum speed of this drive over USB 2.0 port. Or am I doing something wrong?

Can someone let me know the data transfer speed you are able to get? This is really frustrating as it takes more time than copying to a memory stick. I don’t think that should be the case. 5Mbps is way too slow for a hard drive in any case.
