My Book Essential 3TB formatting/installation help

I just bought a My Book Essential 3TB external hard drive, and would like to use it on my Mac.  It says I have to format it first, but in order to format it, I have to partition it.  I don’t want to partition the drive, I just want to format it so it will work.  I plan to use it as a back up.  What does the smartware software do for me.  I don’t need my files to be encrypted, and I don’t want the hard drive to automatically back up for me,  is it worth installing?  Someone please help.

I know very little about Mac . Does your version of Mac support 3 T drives?

Joe

I think it does.  It supported the 1.5TB one that I had before it crashed.

I’m not really sure how to find out if my Mac does, my OS is Lion 10.7.5

It’s just a terminology

partition and format is the same

you can have one partition if you’ll like

follow the steps on the link bellow

How should I format it, Mac OS Extended (journaled), Mac OS Extended (Case Sensitive, Journaled), MS-DOS (FAT), ExFat, or Free Space?  Also, are there any benefits to installing the smartware software?

Extended journaled is fine

no need to update if the drive is working fine

It it ain’t broke…
