Just bought two mybook velociraptor duos. RAID 10?

Hello everyone, I just bought two mybook velociraptor duos.

WD Drive Utilities that come with seems like it doesnt support RAID 10.

Since I bought two units, meaning I have 4 drives in total that toals to 4TB (1TBx4), I should be able to set up RAID 10, correct? If so, how can I achieve this? Through disk utility? Can someone walk me through the process? Technical phone support wasn’t any help.

Welcome to the Community.

A RAID 10 array using two separate enclosures is not a configuration I have seen.

I see, so theres no way I can make it so that they act as one drive?

Could I take out the four drives from the enclosures and put it in to a OWC ThunderBay 4 in order to set it up as different RAID configurations?

Thank you.

Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 allow for an external spanning method called “Storage spaces”, but I am not aware if Mac OS features such an option.

In theory you can place all 4 hard drives in another enclosure, however, the VelociRaptors are 10K RPM hard drives and as such not every enclosure is compatible with them, and some may work but do not provide sufficient ventilation to keep the drives cool.

I’d recommend contacting the enclosure manufacturer for additional information related to compatibility of 10K RPM hard drives.

I believe this to be possible.  I’ve only seen it done using Disk Utility on the Mac (bypassing WD Utilities.)

How to create RAID 10 with disk utility:

Basically you use disk utility to create a mirror on the first TB Duo, then create a mirror on the 2nd TB Duo and then you stripe the 2 mirrors in to a RAID 0 to end up with RAID 10.

Hope this helps
