Error code -50 when attempting to write to a Studio II

I’ve got a 2TB My Book Studio II connected via Firewire 800 to a 2011 iMac; I’ve also got a 500GB Passport daisy-chained to the My Book. The My Book is configured for RAID 0 (for video editing), and I’m running WD Drive Manager 2.2.6 on OS X 10.7.3.

I’ve been using them together happily for almost a year; however, when I tried importing some video on to the My Book today, I started getting import errors, saying that it couldn’t write to the target folder. Opening up Finder, I found that I can’t even create new folders anywhere on the drive, even when I have full permissions applied. Instead, I get the following error message:

The operation can’t be completed. An unexpected error occurred (error code -50).

The drive is still functional for reads - I’ve been able to play back DV files straight off the disk, but any attempt to write to the disk, whether creating a folder, copying/creating a file, all end up with the same error.

I have no problems doing the same operations on the daisy-chained Passport.

Check the status for the drive on Drive Manager.

Try using a different cable or different port.
