Passport shouldn't require any software installation to work properly. It shouldn't prompt to install any drivers or application software.
I'd like to request that the new My Passport Studio 2Tb external drive's USB 2.0 port be upgraded to a USB 3.0 one. I'd like to buy this for use with my PC and prefer the aluminium case to the black plastic one for the My Passport 2Tb. I'm really surprised the new Studios were released witha USB 2.0 port in the first place, since the new Intel chipsets with on-board USB 3.0 mean that it's highly likely that the new round of MacBooks will have USB 3.0 ports. Thanks for reading this!
External hard drive that can be connected by USB through series connections so we could easily add external HD with out lessening the number of USB socket from your computer.
WD are you going to get with the new tech??
USB any number it to slow. You can not put real storage in the box or you need a jet engine, earplugs and reliable AC.
What is the solution. First a ram drive to boot from etc. and as much attached EXTERNAL storage as you can imagine connected by Intel's new 'Thunderbolt' interface. Just look at the numbers.
Secondly has anyone ever actually got the theoretical speed out of USB, Firmwire or eSATA. NO!
Thunderbolt is a proper 2 channel bi-directional interface, designed by the guys who made your processor.
AND IT WORKS. Just received a three disc (3*3Tb) TB drive and it flies even on my MacBook Pro and they are not known for their speed!

I don't really get the difference in pricing for MyPassport PC and Mac. It's the same drive, the Mac version is slightly more expensive, but the PC version is compatible with usb 2.0 and usb 3.0 and the Mac version is not...
The thing is, not only will next Mac releases have usb 3.0 implented when Ivy bridges comes out but also Thunderbolt is on all Mac and coming rapidly to recent PC ultrabooks, WD hard drives or at least the MyPassport for Mac should be Thunderbolt ready and have the adequate slot.
Plus it makes MyPassport Studio clearly obsolete : nobody serious about Video/Graphic/Audio production and editing, and who uses a Mac, continues to use Firewire, which is clearly a dying interface.
It really is about Thunderbolt and I hope the next WD will be compatible because it's going to be REALLY quickly adopted by users compared to eSata or even usb 3.0.
In short : make the next MyPassport for Mac (and PC is a safe bet) with a micro-usb 3 and a thunderbolt port (and they are about the same size).
Would be great if you could plug 1 drive into another, like SCSI devices.
At least the power supply should have a Y cable, so you don't need to keep finding plugs each time you buy another drive.
PLEASE consider this, it would only add pennys to the design and encourage people to stick with WD drives
I was wondering ... it would be nice to have a 10,000rpm passport drive , connected by e-sata ...
I really like with design of WD My Passport Studio, but with a little touch of it would be perfect. Here is an idea for improvement:
Advanced Universal Connection
To be widely used on PC and Mac, the WD My Passport Studio must have one USB 3.0 (for PC) and two FireWire 800 (for Mac). Will be much better if it is compatible with Thunderbolt (which one will come soon with Intel's Ivy Bridge).
Swappable Disk
As described StorageReview: "the My Passport Studio may be one of the rare cases where users could swap out the drive pretty easily for something else". It's a great idea, maybe later I can replace it with faster (7200 rpm) or larger HDD, even Hybrid HDD/SSD.
Rugged Case
Provide the WD My Passport Studio with special rugged case simiar to WD Nomad.
With a beautiful view of this, WD My Passport Studio "Perfect Edition" will successfully become the world's best portable hard.
Whilst industry-standard portable external drives in the 2.5" form factor typically have either 2 or 3 platters, is there any reason why there could not be an external drive with 4 platters?
It would presumably be 15.5mm thick (drive without the cover) rather than the current 12.5mm for a 3-platter drive, but it would crank up maximum capacity to 2TB, based on 4x500GB platters. I work in media and the bigger the disk, the better it is. However I can't lug the 3.5" disks which are way too heavy and unwieldy with their power supplies.
So a 2.5" solution would be ideal, and I believe there would be a market for it particularly among people working in media (movies, digital photography, music etc.) who require tons of data space.
Since 9.5mm 2.5" 1TB drives are now available, my conclusion is that 500GB per platter is a reality. This means that 1.5TB drives at 12.5mm are just a matter of assembling them.
I travel with about a dozen 1TB portable drives (media etc.) but I can't keep lugging more drives as my storage needs expand. My ideal portable drive size right now would be 3TB but I realize this is not yet realistic (although a six platter disk would do it, of course).
Still, 1.5TB should be available in stores anytime now, given that 500TB per platter appears to have been reached. When can we expect this?
i am owner of Mybook Studio ii (1TB RAID1) and Mybook Studio 2TB
for using them, i need to install WD drive manager for Mybook Studio ii ...
and WD Quick View (WD smartware) for Mybook Studio 2TB
if we think many factor thats not efficient and good for performance, its just no good point
i don't know whether WD having issue mixing all together in one Drive Manager
but i think it will great if WD can just make one kind of software that act as drive manager
imagine, if we have multiple external drive, all listed in one drive manager
rather than drive manager for each external drive
