my question is can i replace my working hard drive with a new drive then install windows on the new one,and keep my old drive as a spare so i have two drives with windows installed on both drives and depending on whick one i use i can just swap them and thats it, lets say the same way you would take a music cd out and put another one in.

Yes, it is possible as long as your computer has 2 active SATA ports for boot options. Most computers also allow you to select the bootable device, which eases the process and eliminates the need of a physical drive swap.
