WDC WD20EARS-00MVWB0 fails quick test

Test Option: QUICK TEST

Model Number: WDC WD20EARS-00MVWB0

Unit Serial Number: WD-WCAZA1308286

Firmware Number: 51.0AB51 Capacity: 2000.40 GB

SMART Status: PASS Test Result: FAIL Test

Error Code: 06-Quick Test on drive 3 did not complete! Status code = 07 (Failed read test element), Failure Checkpoint = 97 (Unknown Test) SMART self-test did not complete on drive 3!

Test Time: 20:56:09, January 10, 2011

I bought the above HDD Nov. 30, 2010 and bought a Macally NSA-S35OU3 enclosure for the HDD to make an external HDD. I downloaded WinDlg to test it and it fails the quick test with the above error. What does the error message mean?

I did an extended scan and here are the results:

Test Option: EXTENDED TEST

Model Number: WDC WD20EARS-00MVWB0

Unit Serial Number: WD-WCAZA1308286

Firmware Number: 51.0AB51

Capacity: 2000.40 GB

SMART Status: PASS Test

Result: FAIL Test Error Code: 08-

Test Time: 20:33:44, January 11, 2011

System Info:

XP PRO SP3 X86 32bit

MSI MS-7309

AMD Athlon II X2 240 2.81 GHz

2GB RAM

ASUS EAH5450 1GB RAM

Primary HDD: WDC WD3200AAKS-00V1A0 (SATA)

Secondary HDD: WDC WD500AAKB-00H8A0 (SATA)

External HDD: WDC WD20EARS-00MVWB0 (USB)

What should I do, back up my files from the USB external to my C: & F: and do an extended test again and click fix it after it scans even though it took over 18 hours and use the fix option? I didn’t try the fix option cos I’m using the external to back up my videos and didn’t want to risk losing any of them.

Edit

I downloaded CrystalDiskInfo and this is what it says:

Same thing happened to one of my Caviar Black hard drive.  CrystalDiskInfo report is useless for WDC support.  It would only tell a SMART warning.  I’m in RMA process for my Caviar Black.

Thank you smlunatick for the reply. Should I apply for a RMA or try to fix it? I’m in the process of moving my videos to my other HDD now.

It’ll be nice if I got a reply from someone that works for Western Digital to help. This is suppose to be their support forum or am I wrong and it’s only members that help each other?

It would seem that this is a “peer” based forum site.  Peer is “users” like us and it might mean that WDC support agent “may” visit the forums for time to time.

I did an extended test again after I finished coping files to my other HDD and tried the repair option and I got an error again.

Test Error Code: 08-Error was detected while repairing bad sectors.

I’m just waiting for UPS to deliver my replacement Caviar Black.  You should consider the RMA process.

I applied for a Standard RMA but I got to wait until the end of the month to mail my HDD to Western Digital because I’m on a fixed income. Stupid me I applied for it too soon, cos I don’t have the money to mail it to them now.

RMAs last about 1 month before they expire.  I sent my via hte standard mail (Canda Post.)   It was below $20.00 (CDN) and their was no extra charges for the RMA.
