WD20EFRX-68EUZN0 in QNAP TS-219P+ with bad blocks

Hi,

I have a QNAP TS-219P+ with 2 WD Red 2TB HDs. Recently the NAS is complaining about a “degraded RAID” because of bad blocks on drive2. Scanning the drive always ends in a number (fluctuating number) of bad blocks. After taking out the drive and testing it connected to a windows laptop, with WD Data LifeGuard Diagnostics extended test, the diagnostics say, found bad block please repair. After pressing the repair button, the test goes to passed. If I repeat the test, again bad blocks are found…

Does this now means the HD is broken (NAS indicates yes, Diagnostics are inconclusive as they say pass even though finding bad blocks repeatedly…) and needs to be replaced (less then 1 year old)??? What info does WD need to replace it???

What also confuses me is that the smart info in the NAS shows me different values from the WD Diagnostics, like for example Current_Pending_Sector value which is 0 in WD diagnostics and 49 in the NAS.

Thanks for any hints what to do.

Leon

Data LifeGuard only reports the normalised value of each attribute. Your NAS is probably reporting the raw values. The latter are more useful in this regard.

You could use a tool such as CrystalDiskInfo (Windows) or smartmontools (Linux) to give you a more detailed report.
