I like to know the otiginal count for Heads and Sectors/track for the WD20EARS.
My disk reported after format:
With Fdisk in Gparted-LiveCD “fdisk -lu /dev/sdd” :
Disk /dev/sdd: 2000.4 Gb, 2000398934016 bytes
54 Heads, 49 sectors/tracks, 147659 cylinders, total 3907029168 sectors
units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes/512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x0002decd
Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdd1 2048 4196352 2097152+ 83 Linux
/dev/sdd2 4196360 4405256 104448+ 83 Linux
/dev/sdd3 4405264 3842193424 1918894080+ 83 Linux
/dev/sdd4 3842193425 3907029167 32417871+ 83 Linux
It was impossible to let start the /dev/sdd4 at 3842193432; due to ?? miscalculated Heads and Sectors/track ??
Questions:
-
Do I have to correct these Heads and Sectors/track ? I could, in Expert-mode of fdisk.
-
Is my disk in Advanced Format and aligned?
Thnx,

This is an advanced format drive with 4k/sector.
I think, your linux dóes not know the 4k size.
Make sure, your partions are align at the 4k boundary for optimal performance.

Hi Zahni;
You did not reply on my questions,
I did format the partitioms with fdisk in Gparted-LiveCD 0.6.1-2:
“mkfs.ext3 -b 4096 /dev/sdd1” , etc.
so they are all in 4K size format.
And you could see in the link, - that I already know -, Heads is 255 and Sectors/track is 63.
My disk reported 54 Heads and 49 Sectors/track; migth this be wrong?

Hi Zahni,
I think I did find the solution with Gparted LiveCD 0.6.2-2 test version, see my other message:

What do you think?
