WD10EADS problems

Hi

Hoping somone can advise please.

My drive suddenly started having problems moving files to other drives. The drive is recognised by BIOS and the OS but simply refuses to copy/move files from it to other drives (I use it to transfer files between one pc and my server).

I’ve run a quick test using the data lifeguard which it fails (07 and 97 errors). I’m now running an extended test. This is currently at 22 hours and is moving through sectors very slowly.

Is it worth letting this finish? I’m hoping its trying to fix problems and so I should just let it run. But I’d be grateful for any opinion on whether the drive is lost.

Thanks.

Can you try get the SMART logs and post it here? If there are Relocated Sector/Event Counts, it’s probably not worth to finish the diagnostics.

Thanks for your reply. Some info, which doesn’t look too promising…

Try changing your SATA cable to fix the “Interface CRC Error Count” problem. Observe if it’s still going up. If you’re adventurous, you can monitor it without changing your SATA cable.

Backup your data and do a zero-fill on the hard disk and this might get rid of the pending sector (from my own experience). I don’t see any reallocated sector/event count, so it shouldn’t be bad. After that, check the SMART data again.

Many thanks - will give it a try and report back.

yeah it seems a cable problem

Tried 2 different cables (one of which was a working cable attached to a functioning drive), still no joy. Results are:

Still can’t get my data off the drive. Any ideas either to save the data or the drive please? Actually, it’s the data I want!

What is the error displayed? Redundancy error?

I’m not quite sure what you mean - when I attempt to copy/move files from the drive (they’re all large rips of my DVDs and BRays) it simply hangs and doesn’t copy anything. Cancelling out of the (windows) dialog isn’t possible - again, just hangs.

Can you do a checkdisk scan ? It seems a physical bad block

Ran a check, nothing reported. Am now running it with ‘scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors’ checked.

Thanks for the help.

Interface CRC Error Count did not increase anymore, so that’s good.

Raw Read Error Rate increased, that’s something that entitles an RMA if my understanding from the WD DLG (Warranty = 1) is correct. Here’s some reading : RAW-Read-Errors-help (updated the link. For some reason the link invalidated after I went back to Page 1)

Thanks. Got a 404 on the link - think this is it:

Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors failed. Windows suggested I back up the drive (given that I can’t move files, unlikely) and contact the manufacturer.

Guess the inevitable conculsion is that I’ve lost the drive and my files. Grr!

Thanks for the help and suggestions. If there’s anything else I can do, other than fix it with a four pound claw hammer, I’m open to suggestions!
