Synology DS213+ and WD Red performance

Hi,

My Synology DS213+ was originally configured with 2 x Seagate 2TB ST2000DM001 drives. Macrium Reflect reported transfer speeds ranging from anything between 500Mb/s to 1Gb/s but averaged around the 850Mb/s mark.

I’ve recently rebuilt my lab and replaced the Seagate drives with 2 x WD 2TB Red drives in order to make the most of their 24x7\NAS capabilities.

Unfortunately the Macrium Reflect backup (same partition containing the same data) now hovers around the 520Mb/s transfer rate and never hits the same dizzy heights as when the Seagate drives were fitted in the DS213+.

I’m puzzled as to why the WD Red drives appear to be delivering lower performance.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Sean

Hello,

I recommend you connect these drives directly to a computer and run a diagnostic using WD DLG to determine the drives health.

Hi,

This was done before transferring into the NAS and all was fine.

SMART tests run on the disks in the NAS also confirm that all appears fine.

I’ve read certain reviews that suggest that WD Red performance drops when using RAID so, as the previous non-RAID performance was fine, am wondering if the new RAID 0 configuration is the reason for the drop?

Many thanks,

Sean
