How to check if free-fall sensor is enabled?

Hello community,

this question may sound weird, but for some reason I am not sure if the free-fall sensor is enabled on a WD Scorpio Black. When I moved the laptop briskly, I couldn’t hear the head doing its emergency parking.

How would it be possible to check that? Is there some sort of override by the system? Or is it an integral part of the disk’s mechanism?

If the drive has this feature, it should be enabled. You can probably check the features of your hard disk on the WD site. If you want to know if it took place, then you need to read its SMART attribute. Can’t remember which one on top of my head, but a generic SMART reader should list out all available attributes and their value. If it increased vs the last time you checked it, then it G-sensed the free fall.
