Head parking?

Hi!

I recently bought a combination of Synology DS213 and 2x WD30EZRX. I’m surprised about the amount of noise that the hard drives produce and am worried that maybe the WDs are defected or something. In any case, I have no earlier experience with such drives so I decided to go ahead and ask here first if this is normal.

First, here is a short video

that describes what type of noise there is. The noise is (although very quiet in the video due to the noisy microphone) audible more than 5m away from the machine. When there is no big transfer going on the machine still produces frequent gurgling. The smart tests are ok. After some googling I’m wondering if this is related to the head parking issue that has been discussed around here too. I would be very happy about any comments on this?

Hi there,

I’m not an expert on this area.

I was digging in WD and they have a knowledge base related to the sounds of the drive. Take a look at it, this might help.

Also you can use the WDDLG tool to test the units.
