Caviar Blue 320BG

Windows XP computer.

Old hard drive still works but is developing a grumble.

Unplug old drive, plug same connectors into new Caviar Blue, insert Windows XP CD, power on, get this message:

“Setup did not find any hard disk drive installed…”

What I do wrong?

Can I assume that BIOS settings & drivers etc are okay since the old hd boots okay?

Do I need goof with SATA drivers?

UPDATE:

WD support asks me if I’ve installed motherboard drivers. I have the MSI CD and there’s at least 20 folders named “Driver”. What am I looking for and how do you install it?

Drivers are specific to the model of the motherboard and the operating system you will use.  If you are not sure which to choose you may contact MSI.

I think I narrowed down the problem. I’m installing a SATA II hard drive. These are meant to be backwards compatible with SATA I systems but there are exceptions such as those with the VT8237 chipset.

Western Digital is telling me to:

  1. Install a jumper between pins 5 & 6.  Did that – doesn’t work.

  2. Install a SATA II controller card. No thanks.

I’m going to throw the SATA II drive overboard and buy a SATA I for less money and (hopefully) live happily ever after.
