New Release - Firmware Version 1.02.04 for My Book World Edition I & II (8/16/10)

Hmm …

  1. I had tried such way - changed version using SSH and manual updated firmware to the older. NAS said SUCCESS, GO TO REBOOT and never return back.

  2. Slow WEB access and slow boot. Using SSH type command ‘top’ and try to find process ‘ksoftirqd/0’. If it takes 80-99% of cpu time, you just have hdd corrupted. In my case i have 600+ uncorrectable sectors and 10000+ sectors with access time >1 second. These sectors are the main reason why the NAS works so slow.

I have firmware version 1.02.04 running on my world book.

iTunes is not able to access the worldbook.

I gather a fix for this is being worked on- in the form of a firmware update?

Can this please confirmed - along with an ETA for the update?

Thanks

Yup - WD released an update (1.02.04) then pulled it due to “unforseen” problems.

The issue now, is that that was over ten weeks ago - and its been two weeks since any official reponse in this thread.

I bought WD for two reasons - 1) Affordability 2) WD’s reputation.

Looks like I got 1) right.

Hey, what do I care - I’ve got Twonky 6 running - and if WD want to discuss warranty issues I’ll be happy to discuss lack of customer support.

How did you get Twonky 6 installed?  I got my World Book a couple of weeks ago and it came with Twonky 5.1.  What’s new in Twonky 6 compared to Twonky 5.1?

thanks

I have a bricked MBWE 1TB edition after only one days use.  It would appear that some of those that managed to upgrade to 1.02.04 have lived to regret it, see this link:

http://community.wdc.com/t5/My-Book-World-Edition/Firmware-update-gt-Unit-unresponsive/td-p/45564/highlight/true/page/2

I assume that my new unit had 1.02.04 already on it and hence i now have a dead NAS.

After a call to WD support I gave up and sent the unit back for a replacement.  This arrived complete with 1.02.04 and I have installed it and it is working perfectly together with my WD TV Live.

Anyone care to try this version…

No offence - but if you have to ask how to install it - then I really shouldn’t tell you  - Google “Optware”.

As regards the difference - my Samsung Wave smartphone can now communicate with the MBWE - with Twonky 5.1 the server could see the phone - but the phone couldn’t see the server.

Since one of the main objectives in purchasing a NAs was to be able to stream to my phone - I had no alternative but to upgrade Twonky myself.

Hi, I have tried that firmware 01.02.05 and it works fine for me. The problem with unaccessibility has gone. Solved my problem.

Thanks.

Interesting (and brave :))

As a point of interest - what version of Twonky does that firmware have?

Twonky server 5.1.4-1

The MBWE has an option to check for new firmware.  When I tried using this to check for 01.02.05 Firmware, the MBWE failed to find 01.02.05 and instead told me that my current firmware was up to date.

Are new firmware versions typically available to installed directly using the HTML interface on the MBWE, or do you typically need to download them to your computer from the WD site and then upload them to the MBWE?

Or is my MBWE not dowloading 01.02.05 because it’s not yet officially available?

I upgraded to the latest firmware (1.02.05).

The NAS now seems to be “rock solid”, but Twonkymedia has a huge problem: it won’t recognize mkv files as video files.

I hope that WD will soon release a new firmware that corrects this problem, or that someone can tell us how to fix Twonkymedia…

I tried to rename mkv file to wmv but my sitecom MD-270s won’t read them.

Where you guys got that firmware? Is it for MBWE? Checked with the web config and it does’nt see that version. On tge download section, the latest still seems to be 1.01.16??? What am I missing? Thanks

Yes, it’s for the MBWE (I installed it on a MBWE II)

This is the file, but if you use Twonkyserver I don’t suggest you this firmware.

anyway, if you want to upgrade it, you have to do it manually

If you’re having stability issues with your current MBWE where it becomes unreachable or stops responding I would suggest installing this version. It pretty much fixes te MIONet startup behavior.

It is not “publically” available thru the UI interface for the drive, you must download and apply it manually using the DL link in the previous post.

There is no update for the version of Twonky in this newer firmware. If you’re experiencing issues with Twonky now such as .MKV support, you wil still have these same issues after the update. In order to resolve those you must upgrade Twonky manually using the source on the Twonky. However, this update will not use the internal WD reg key so you will only have a 30 day license for the 6.x version unless you purchase a full license for roughly $20USD.

Hi All,

I have installed the 1.02.05 last night  on my book world 2 after asking the support guys what is new in this FW… apparently they had no clue it existed.

I do not use twonky so I have removed the execute permissions on the S97Twonkyserver using chmod a-x.

So far it looks good, I hope it’s stable. What I appreciated is that upgrading the FW did not delete my data.

BTW: the mionet problem is GONE

Is it working ok for you ?

Thanks,

Dragos

So is there any danger that WD will release an “official” update that can be downloaded through the interface, with the option either to exclude or include a Twonky 6 update with a full licence. I purchase hardware with the assumption that I will get “lifetime” support for firmware or software uprades and do not have to get into hacks or backdoor downloads to keep it running correctly. Although my MBWE 1 Tb is running relatively stable, I would like to keep it that way and have the latest firmware/software to ensure it does.

Has anyone noticed that the link to 01.02.05 that was in amilkare’s post above has been removed?  The location it used to point to no longer exists, either.  In fact, the server itself, download.wdc.com, no longer responds (although it does respond to pings).  I -did- manage to download the .img file during the few hours that the link was there, but now I’m a little hesitant to install it.  Anyone else have any thoughts?

Gary

Yes, I also noticed this. I was hesitant to download the file while it was available. I think it’s safer to wait for an official release. Let’s hope that will be soon.

Dave

I’m a long time WD fan but am beginning to lose faith.  I purchased a WB 2TB and set it up to use simply as a NAS file server - no media streaming or other things (MioNet not enabled, sleep disabled).  It set up fine but I started to run into the loss of connectivity issue.  It is plugged into a switch port on my router.  When connectivity is lost I can still ping it but no web interface nor file access until I reboot it.  I cannot tell for sure how often it happens because it is not used that ofter but it seems to last a day or so.

I really wondering about the WD support when the firmware showing on the web site is actually older than what the drive was shipped with.  I recently took a chance and installed the 01.02.05 software but continue to have the disconnect issue.  My next step is to try to set up a “keep alive”  script on the network computers to see if this works.  After that, it is going back to the store!
